The Greek Communist Party gained control of the Greek resistance against the Nazi occupation of Greece during the Second World War with the objective of bringing the country into the Soviet orbit at the time of the German withdrawal. The effort eventually failed and in his book, Kousoulas tells the story with compelling documentation from the Communist archives he was able to obtain and study and with the added understanding of one who was there. The legendary commander of the Allied Mission to occupied Greece, the late Christopher M. Woodhouse (Chris) wrote in his preface to this book: “Again and again, in reading this book, I have come upon information entirely new to me which exactly tallies with, or confirms, or explains more fully, things which I experienced or observed but failed to understand at the time.” The book remained in print for over twenty-five years. It was also translated and published in Greek.

In a review published in the (London) Times Literary Supplement, Reginald Leeper, the British ambassador to the wartime Greek government-in-exile wrote that “this is the definitive book for this turbulent period in Greece."
